Seoul is one of the key areas in which immigrants wish to reside. The foreign population in Seoul has increased steadily since 1990s, they have gradually formed immigrant enclaves.
There are 19 identified immigrant enclaves in Seoul based on the following criteria: 1) they are located in Seoul; 2) they represent cultural or ethnic group distinguished form ordinary Koreans; 3) they have formed voluntarily without government’s involvement. The major enclaves are Korean Chinese (Joseonjok) enclave called “Josenjok Town”; Taiwanese (Hwagyo) enclave called “Little Chinatown”; French enclave called “Seorae Village”; Mongolian enclave called “Mongolian Town”; Islamic Community called “Islamic Village”; Japanese enclave called “Little Tokyo”; Filipino enclave called “Sunday Market”; Central Asian enclave called “Little Russia” and so on. The immigrant enclaves in Seoul are still in early stage of development show the both possibilities to be intercultural hubs and to be isolated ghettos.
