It has been over four years since the Refugee Act became effective in the Republic of Korea. The Refugee Act was enacted in 2012 and came into force in 2013. One of the biggest impacts on Korean Society has been that refugee applicants have dramatically increased. Although the final Refugee Act was largely revised from the original bill, it has challenged the administrative and legal structure and brought about meaningful change to Korean Society. This issue brief will give an overview of what has changed in South Korea since the enactment of the Refugee Act, and explore and explore the policy implementation and practices.
